When King Philip of Macedon threatened Sparta, he reportedly sent a message:
“If I invade Laconia, I shall turn you out.”
The Spartans replied with a single word.
“If.”
One word.
No speech.
No excuses.
No drama.
Just a reminder that the future had not been written yet.
The outcome was not guaranteed.
Everything depended on what happened next.
Most People Use “If” as an Excuse
If I had more time.
If I had more money.
If I was younger.
If I was fitter.
If circumstances were different.
For many people, “if” becomes a hiding place.
A place where dreams go to wait.
And wait.
And wait.
Until eventually they disappear.
Kipling’s Conditions
Rudyard Kipling wrote one of the most famous poems ever written.
Not about talent.
Not about luck.
Not about privilege.
About character.
The entire poem is built around conditions.
If you can keep your head.
If you can trust yourself.
If you can endure.
If you can persist.
The message is simple.
The person you want to become lives behind a series of behaviours.
There is a price of admission.
Napoleon Hill’s Conditions
Napoleon Hill understood the same thing.
People read about success and think it is guaranteed.
It isn’t.
Success has conditions.
Financial freedom has conditions.
Confidence has conditions.
Leadership has conditions.
Results have conditions.
Everybody wants the result.
Very few people are interested in meeting the conditions.
The OFB Version
Want to get fitter?
If you train consistently.
If you recover properly.
If you follow the plan.
Want more confidence?
If you keep promises to yourself.
If you do difficult things.
If you stop negotiating with yourself.
Want better finances?
If you build your powerbase.
If you learn the skills.
If you have the conversations.
If you follow up.
If you stay in the game long enough.
The result is waiting on the other side of the conditions.
The Future Is Not Written
This is where most people get stuck.
They look at where they are today and assume they know where they will be tomorrow.
That is rarely true.
The future is not written.
Not your fitness.
Not your finances.
Not your confidence.
Not your relationships.
Not your business.
Not your life.
The answer is still:
If.
If you follow the plan.
If you keep moving.
If you keep learning.
If you keep showing up.
If you stay in the fight.
Then the future begins to change.
The Standard
Everybody wants good results.
The question is whether they are willing to meet the conditions that create them.
The Spartans understood that.
Kipling understood that.
Napoleon Hill understood that.
The future remains unwritten.
The outcome remains uncertain.
The opportunity remains available.
If.
Full time at your job, part time on your fortune.
