MINDSET & MOTIVATION

The Endurance Series — Part 3 of 5

In 1915, Ernest Shackleton’s ship became trapped in Antarctic ice. Over the next several months the crew would face uncertainty, loss, hardship, leadership, and survival. Their story provides some remarkable lessons about resilience.

The ice had held Endurance for months.

Now it began to move.

The great sheets of Antarctic ice pushed against one another with enormous force.

The ship groaned.

Its timbers twisted.

Every crack echoed through the hull.

The crew could do nothing to stop it.

The storm had arrived.

Storms Are Part of the Journey

There comes a point in every worthwhile pursuit when life becomes difficult.

Not inconvenient.

Difficult.

Your progress stalls.

Your finances take a hit.

Your business slows.

An injury interrupts your training.

A relationship is tested.

Nobody enjoys these seasons.

But nobody avoids them either.

Storms are part of the journey.

The Lesson

The men aboard Endurance could not fight the weather.

They could not stop the ice.

They could not force the ship to survive.

They accepted what they could not control and focused on what they could.

Their attitude.

Their effort.

Their discipline.

Their responsibility to one another.

Sometimes the goal is no longer to make progress.

Sometimes the goal is simply to protect what you’ve already built.

Hold the Helm

Every storm asks the same question.

“What will you do now?”

Will you abandon your standards?

Or will you hold the helm?

When life becomes difficult, keep doing the simple things.

Train if you can.

Learn if you can.

Save what you can.

Encourage someone.

Show up.

Protect the routine.

Because when you can’t make progress, protect your standards.

Strong Together

One of Shackleton’s greatest strengths was understanding that no one would survive alone.

The crew shared the workload.

They encouraged one another.

They laughed when they could.

They solved problems together.

Storms have a way of reminding us that people matter.

Whether it’s your family, your training partner, your workmates, or your inner circle, difficult seasons are easier when people are pulling in the same direction.

Every Storm Ends

When you’re standing in the middle of a storm, it’s easy to believe it will never end.

But history says otherwise.

Storms pass.

Winter becomes spring.

Injuries heal.

Businesses recover.

Confidence returns.

The question is never whether storms exist.

The question is who you’ll be when the sky clears.

Looking Ahead

The pressure on Endurance continued to build.

Every day the ice squeezed harder.

Soon, Shackleton would face the decision no leader wanted to make.

The expedition was about to change forever.

But the mission that mattered most was only just beginning.

The Standard

Storms don’t build character.

They reveal it.

When life becomes difficult, don’t abandon your standards.

Protect your routine.

Look after your people.

Hold the helm.

Weather the storm.

Full time at your job, part time on your fortune.
